Winter hiking

Winter hiking is very beautiful, but the conditions are much more challenging than in summer. How can you prepare yourself for exposed terrain?

Winter hiking

3 basic rules

First, plan your hike at least one day in advance. Take a good look at the route you want to take and adjust your schedule accordingly.

Second, check the weather thoroughly. Mountains are often unpredictable, so it is important to be prepared for any weather conditions, especially at higher altitudes.

Thirdly, prepare your winter equipment. In winter, it is ideal to be equipped with at least crampons, which will make it easier for you to move even on uneven terrain, or if you are heading into more demanding conditions, we recommend an ice axe.

Preparation for exposed terrain

Due to constant changes, the snow cover changes, creating susceptibility to avalanches. Therefore, proper preparation and caution are important. If you are heading into difficult terrain, we recommend that you take an avalanche course, where, in addition to the basics, you will also learn, for example, cohesion testing and stability testing or experience hiking with mountain guide.

And the last important thing related to winter tourism is the winter closure, which begins on 1. november and ends on 15. june. It serves to protect animals, as some hibernate during the winter and others give birth to new offspring. It also serves as protection for you, the tourists, who often underestimate the increased risk of danger.
