Gastro tourism: Are you also more hungry after a hike in Tatras?
After the winter season, our mountains woke up to a new era and became more colorful than ever. The meadows at lower elevations bloom, and the forests change their colors. A spring hike in such colorful surroundings is an unforgettable experience.
The alpine trails are closed until mid-June, but there are many more options for hiking on safe trails. The contrast of the colorful nature with the still-white snowy peaks is lovely, especially this season. Equally important is the food and drinks that you take with you or plan after the hiking trip. You can find many types of restaurants in the Tatras, from traditional mountain huts with local specialties to elegant restaurants with excellent gourmet food.
We stopped at Koliba Kamzík on our way from Hrebienokk to Starý Smokovec. The traditional Slovak wooden interior looks cozy. There are napkins with blueprints on the tables and small flowers in vases. Now, in the spring, you can even sit comfortably on sunny days on the covered terrace while enjoying the warmth of a mountain cottage. We were also impressed by the original wooden floor; it provides a local and authentic atmosphere. They probably cannot offer anything other than traditional Slovak tasty specialties in such an interior.
We chose two dishes: Potato pancakes with shredded turkey meat and a Kamzík Plate full of traditional Slovak specialties – at a discounted price thanks to the MYAPLEND menu. The meals were served on traditional blue plates, and we were delighted with the experience. The perfect final touch to an excellent lunch was the vanilla ice cream, which we rate as 10 out of 10 points. We have to admit that Koliba Kamzík is worth your attention. And if you like folk music, you should stop by Koliba Kamzík on Fridays and Saturdays after 5 p.m.; that's when the live Gypsy music warms your soul.
We had similar experiences in Tatranská Lomnica, specifically in Olívia Restaurant, located on the ground floor of Hotel Kukučka. Inside, it looks like a modern mountain hut; the interior combines comfort and a feeling that Tatras are somewhat unique - even after returning home. Decorations were chosen concerning Tatra nature, especially majestic deer, and the interior is generally decorated by colors in brownish shades. The staff is very friendly. The menu offers dishes from different types of meat and fish; there are plenty of vegetables; if desserts are exactly what you need, you have found the right place. The galley prepares dishes from fresh ingredients; we have to say they are quite creative; it's a pleasure to look at the menu and all the tasty dishes.
We couldn't resist ordering the venison steak in rosehip sauce with ginger and toasted Karlovy Vary dumplings and the grilled tuna steak in a parmesan-sesame crust served on corn puree with teriyaki sauce. A glass of quality wine perfectly matched the meal, but you can also choose from a wide range of unique lemonades. These restaurants also have favorable online reviews from several food bloggers, which we surely second.
