Discover the cultural treasures of the Tatras

Whether you are an art lover, interested in history or simply want to see the unknown, the Tatras hide many treasures, you just need to know which direction to go. Join us on a journey through the Tatra museums. A journey through history and traditions, fauna and flora to the national uniqueness.

We start in Tatranská Lomnica, in a museum whose traditions date back to 1957, when the Museum of TANAP, the oldest national park in Slovakia, was founded. The museum boasts collections of numerous objects from the fields of botany, zoology, history, cartography, geology and ethnography. You can thus look forward to three main expositions.

The museum's unique dioramas, which are intended to bring visitors closer to the real environment in which the animals of the Tatra Mountains live, are a distinctive feature of the museum's exhibition. These are mainly "icons" such as the High Tatras chamois, the High Tatras marmot, the lynx, the wolf, the brown bear and the mountain deer. There are also rare crustaceans such as the northern frogfish, which survived the Ice Age itself.

Children can explore the bear's den before entering the exposition and get to know a little bit of the life of our largest Tatra beast.

The natural history exposition educates visitors about interesting topics such as geology, Tatra fauna and flora, flora and fauna of the forest, streams and lakes, the highest positions of the Tatras and many others.

In the ethnographic exposition , visitors will get to know the material and spiritual culture of the people of the Tatra Mountains. You will also find various collection items and 3D exhibits.

Next, we move to the museum in Stary Smokovec, which introduces visitors to the past of the Tatras, when life was not so rushed, and when a camera, mobile phone or camera were not part of the mandatory equipment of every tourist. Welcome to theMuseum of Tatra Cinema and Photography. Here you will find 3 interesting expositions that focus on the development of film and photography, through the famous personalities of the Tatras to seasonal thematic exhibitions. Within the year-round exhibition "Transformations of the Tatra Mountains" you have the opportunity to see exhibits capturing the life, atmosphere, transformations of the Tatra Mountains, people working in the field of film, as well as the development of photo technology since the end of the 19th century.

The exposition "Personalities of the Tatras" is dedicated to the works of the personalities of Tatra cinema and photography. In this exposition you have the opportunity to get to know these personalities better thanks to the testimonies of their loved ones or personal exhibits.

During the year, you will always find a different seasonal exhibition.

In the last exposition you will find exhibitions of photographs on current or commemorative themes. Previous exhibitions focused on the themes of Tatra trams, photographs of the High Tatras on Slovak postage stamps, an exhibition mapping the life of Jiří Wolker and others.

We will stay in Stary Smokovec for a while, as we continue to the museum, which represents the traditional cultural heritage of Slovakia as well as European and world uniqueness. Yes, we are talking about theMuseum of Mountain Porters, which presents the "craft" of our porters (sherpas), who contribute to the fact that we never miss anything in the mountains. They are the only ones of their kind to carry dozens of kilograms of cargo on their shoulders to the alpine huts several times a week.

In addition to the fact that the museum is located in one of the oldest buildings in the High Tatras - the Swiss House, it also presents the beautiful idea of portering. And that is to record the trace of as many still active, but also already legendary porters from the foothills of the Tatras as possible. During the tour, you can read about their activities, interesting facts, but also their fates. You can also see the equipment and other items characteristic of porters.

Nowadays, the museum also includes a unique Sherpa Caffe with a children's corner.
