Did you know that these famous personalities have visited the Tatras?

The Tatra Mountains, the jewel of Slovakia, have attracted many prominent personalities from all over the world. From Baron Nathan Rothschild to the British Queen Elizabeth II.

Did you know that these famous personalities have visited the Tatras?

1. Baron Nathan Rothschild
Nathan Rothschild was a member of the famous Rothschild family of bankers. He visited the High Tatras in 1880, specifically Starý Smokovec. It was because of its reputation as one of the oldest and most famous recreational resorts in the High Tatras and Slovakia. Rothschild's visit increased the prestige and popularity of Starý Smokovec as such.
 
2. Queen Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary
Queen Elisabeth, known as Sissi, visited the High Tatras, including the Smokovce in 1895. This visit was part of her travels for medical stays, as she often sought refuges outside Vienna for her health and mental well-being.
 
3. The writer Franz Kafka
The famous writer Franz Kafka also came to see the Tatra Mountains in 1909. His destination was the Tatranské Matliare, where many famous personalities had been treated. Kafka was treated for pulmonary tuberculosis in the village from December 1920 to August 1921. On 16 August 2001, a memorial plaque with his portrait was unveiled in his memory in Tatranské Matliare.
 
4. British Queen Elizabeth II.
The Queen visited us in the High Tatras in 2008, in addition to visit in Bratislava. She came together with her husband Prince Philip accompanied by the then President Ivan Gašparovič. She took a cable car from Starý Smokovec  up to Hrebienok. She was welcomed by everyone in the Tatras - folklorists, skiers, mountain guides, rescuers and hundreds of Tatra people.
