The history of sledding

Sledding is one of the most popular winter activities today, bringing joy not only to children but also to adults all over the world.

The history of sledding

The roots of sledging go deep into history, where sledges were used mainly as a practical means of transporting goods and people in difficult winter conditions. The first sledges originated with the North American Indians, who used them to transport cargo during the harsh winter months. These ancient sledges were considerably larger than those we know today. Long wooden planks, up to two metres long, were joined together with sinews, giving them the sturdiness and flexibility needed for heavy work in snowy landscapes. According to some sources, sledges even appeared much earlier in history, in ancient Egypt. They were used to transport huge blocks of stone to build the pyramids.

During the 16th and 17th centuries, sledging also began to appear in Central Europe, where it soon found its place in people's everyday lives. According to sources, one of the first instances of sledging being used "purely for fun" was in Russia in 1650, when young Russian aristocrats took part in a dangerous game, building wooden tracks and then sliding down them on sledges carved out of ice. In our own country, sledges were first used as a necessary tool for transporting wood, hay and other cargo. Only later did this practical means of transport become a tool of entertainment. Sledging quickly spread and became a popular family activity.

Over the years, the popularity of sledging led to the development of more modern, safer and more aesthetic models. The traditional wooden sledges were gradually replaced by lighter metal and plastic versions, which brought a better riding experience and, of course, a higher level of safety. Although many nostalgics still can't get enough of the wooden sleds from their childhood. Do you know someone like that? :)

Today, sledging is not only a fun activity, but also an official sport that has a firm place in the Winter Olympic disciplines. So sledging has come a long way - from ancient working tools to modern sports equipment.
