From 1. June back to the mountains: the summer tourist season in the Tatras begins

At the beginning of June 2025, the Tatras will be fully opened to mountain lovers again. After an eight-month break, the winter closure of the high mountain hiking trails ends, during which nature had time to regenerate and animals had time for a quiet winter season. From June onwards, you can go on your favourite hikes without restrictions and experience the Tatra Mountains in their full summer glory.

Why are some trails actually closed during the winter?
It was not always so. It was only since the turn of 1980/1981 that a systematic closure of parts of the Tatra trails for the winter period was introduced. The reason for this was the realisation that increased movement of people in the most sensitive areas could endanger the natural environment and the tranquillity of the animals. The winter closure applies annually from 1. November to 31. May and mainly affects high mountain saddles, ridges and peaks.

More than 35 trails reopened
From 1. June, you can also start hiking again on popular trails that were closed during the winter - more than 35 hiking trails throughout the Tatra Mountains, including:

- Peaks: Slavkovský štít, Jahňací štít, Kôprovský štít, Rysy
- Saddles: Priečne sedlo, Poľský hrebeň, Bystrá lávka
- Valleys: Javorová, Bielovodská, Mlynická, Furkotská, Malá and Veľká Studená dolina

These routes are among the most beautiful, but at the same time the most demanding. When planning such hikes, we recommend checking the current conditions and weather.

The Tatras deserve respect
The summer hiking season is the time when the Tatra Mountains are at their peak. However, nature must be protected even at this time. Don't leave marked trails, don't leave rubbish behind and be respectful of the surroundings and other tourists. Nature will pay you back.
